I've never had a problem with playing DS with Norton on, but the one thing I can't do is host a server (private). I'm pretty sure Norton is blocking the port required to host, and I've tried many ports. :/ Can anyone help with this? (Writing a Norton Rule?)

Can you host with it turned off? I think definitely narrowing down where the problem lies should be your first step. I've never used Norton 360, Norton, Symantec period, has always left a bad taste in my mouth Tongue ...not so tasty...I'll see if I can dig something up though and try to help you out.

The thing that I would do is this:
Remove your current firewall and antivirus and
Download free antivirus; Avast:
http://www.avast.com/
And free firewall; COMODO Firewall Pro:
http://www.comodo.com/

Both of these are free and very highly rated..
Comodo Firewall pro has same effect than any other p2p firewall (maybe better than p2ps tbh)
both of these are very flexiable and you can do kinda anything to them.. no no they are not open source but the changes that you can do are way over your thinking .. trust me you will love them :p also easy to use..

Ps. I use both of them so you can trust these programms ^^ Also easy to allow/block any route/ip/Vlan/task/qslparametres .. practicly anything

What operating system are you using? I was never able to host a server on my Vista PC as when I clicked start server the Pc just froze. Was fine on my XP machine. I tried this with both Anti virus and DFire wall on and off. Any help with Vista would be nice if anyone has this problem solved.

Sometimes though we can't just go taking things off of a PC, especially if it's a shared PC Tongue...I don't know if this is the case, but still...I use Avast Pro and can say it's easy to use and pretty efficient. I had Norton AV, and McAfee too, both I did not like. If you are able too, I would uninstall Norton and cancel any type of subscription (after you've tested everything else first Tongue) and use the freeware though. AVG, Avast, etc work a lot better IMHO. If you can't, then it will just be a trial and error kind of thing until you find what is blocking the ports. And then going from there.

Hm.. Interesting thoughts here, and yes, the PC is shared. That also means that my parents will say no. :/ I think they're just too close-minded on the whole computer thing. They don't often use it but for e-mail. When they heard how "Efficient" Norton was... Well...

Would it do any good, as Shal suggested, to just turn off Norton while I host? But then you have the whole unprotected PC. Windows security is turned off because of Norton, but while hosting, I guess that would protect against... well, nothing really. :p As long as I don't use Explorer...

I had troubles hosting a server while kaspersky was active. I just deactivated him and it worked perfectly (nowadays i have router issues too).

Anyway, I didnt had any complication afterwards when i turned kasperksy off.

I've had no problems turning off A/V, firewalls, etc...but I wouldn't recommend leaving it that way.

So you say you ONLY use Norton 360? Window's firewall is off, no router firewall's or anything like that?

You can try this see if it helps you...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K8XXqyRMbs&feature=related

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton360.nsf/0/c7cddb1ba72b95036525736800684073?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us

Again though, easiest thing would be to turn off Norton 360 and see if you can host. Just do it as a test, no need to have it on long, you can even make the server private so only you can join. If it works, then I'd try to modify Norton, if not then there has to be something else. My issues had to do with my router.

I figured though you wouldn't be able to just delete it. Maybe though you can approach your parents letting them know that they are wasting their money Tongue ...Norton is a huge resource hog, and really isn't any more efficient than the freeware. I think they make it harder to use as they limit the options you have when it comes to adjusting it, and of course you have to pay them monthly which is BS. For what they give you it's a complete rip-off, IMHO. Anyhow, if not leave it as it is Tongue ...I know what it's like trying to explain these type of things to people who are just too cautious.
