Well, if you buy a game, you're bound to get some litterature, or manual, with the game. Now, in my experience, this manual, has become thinner and thinner, as the games get more and more advanced and visually dazzling.
There used to be history, lore, even sometimes short tales describing the universe. Great examples would be:

Starcraft
Alpha Centauri

And truly dissapointing ones would be like:
WoW
Warcraft III (both was by FAR worse off than WarII)

Now I miss this. I want something cool to mull over while I take a dump. Is there anyone else who feels the same?

I guess, i'm pretty much the opposite. It's been some time since last bought a game, but I kinda get this same feeling whenever i'm trying to figure out whether that MMORPG is worth playing or not. The first thing I look at is the list of features, while lore and such come last, if ever.

Of course, trying to decide whether the game is worth playing or not is somewhat different from taking a look at a manual. But even after I've started downloading the new game and I start thinking which class would be interesting to play, I'm still looking for hard facts. It pisses me off having to read bothersome explanations about what is a warrior and what is a mage, I want numbers and data, not some archetype's memoir. For a near-perfect example, take a look at dawnspire's Character creation system. There's a bit of lore for each skill, (sticky bomb is actually an explosive with a short fuse, wrapped in an old sock that has been dipped in tar) but you can also find hard facts, telling you exactly how much you'd benefit from spending another skill point on this skill.

Most of the background story and lore and stuff are optional.

You do know that  Blizzard has written over 2000 pages of WoW history + all warcraft elements can be found from WoW.
I play WoW myself and I got this book with 589 pages only telling the past stories about different races and classes. WoWs background stories are enourmos Tongue Starcraft is also from Blizzard and I did just check this out. It's background stories are smaller same with the history written than WoWs itself. WoW is based on all Warcrafts stories making it even bigger..

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/story/index.html here are just samples of that stuff :p...

But I do agree with the main idea there

Well yes, for instance I've read the "demon soul" triology myself, and it was rather good, BUT not something which actually came with the box. Which means, that well, you have to be extraordinarily interested to buy books that costs as much as the game.
I wanna have some lore once you buy the game, the DvD's as such are really cheap, and usually you only get some troubleshooting and interface description for written material.

As you mentioned with WoW, there's a LOT of potential to include some things with the box, and the inability to do so left me rather dissapointed.

Ah you ment that, yeah true. You do have to buy stuff or make yourway to "legal" downloading for them. I've bought TBC battlechest... from friend when TBC came out. with 10 €.. I got some books with that. But yeah you can buy this Tale Of warcraft book which costs... 34 € Tongue

Google is transferring books to the internet right now, or at least planning to do that. You can probably find some WoW books there and such. The author might not benefit much from it but it's free.
