SO I was thinking as I always do, how much do you guys reckon it would cost to make DS2? Not that I am going to run out and finance it unless I win big on the Euro lottery. Just a ball park figure. I'm not talking AAA game costs of £10/£20 million but a realistic indie cost.
For some reason I had the figure of £500 000 in mind or 568,391.64 EUR. I reckoned you could get 5 people to work on the title full time for 4 years at £25 000 or 28,419.58 EUR per year. Total £400 000 or 454,804.21 EUR. That’s a really good wage to me, not sure if it is in the games industry though.

The other £100 000 or 113,682.29 EUR would be used to buy hardware and software. Pay taxes, electricity and office space. Cover other costs such as buying domain names, music, basic advertising etc.

It’s just another one of those thoughts that go through my head on these long working days.

SO anyone want to give a total and why?  Grin

We couldn't really get a lot done with that could we? Then again we could pay 4 tramps to try and make it for 27 euros  Grin Grin

I'm sure Waihi knows more about this, but for example licensing an engine could take quite a lot from your budget (read from somewhere that Unreal 3 engine is about 300 000 €), and I'm pretty sure that the devs would love to have a ready made engine after all the hassle they had making their own.

So if anyone has an extra million in their pockets I'm pretty sure we would be good to go.

The unreal 3 engine costs about closer to 700 000 euros or even more I believe. They also ask for 3% of all sales and various other fees such as 100 000 euros per console you port to. Not worth it in the end. The great thing is they already have an engine. The work would be in heavily modifiying it for a modern game if possible. It was just curiosity on my part what you guys thought of a figure.

If you give that million to me instead of developing DS 2, I'll be your bitch for a long time.

EDIT: (just saying)

I found this site that details a lot of info on many 3d engines for those interested. I started on the unreal 3 page.

There's plenty of good free or low cost engines around, such as Unity3d. So I don't think the engine would be the problem here.

As for the cost, it all comes down to how high quality game you want to make. For something like Dawnspire the figures Persus gave would be a good start, although the wages are definitely in the low end. To get an idea of average salaries in the industry, see here:
http://gamedeveloper.texterity.com/gamedeveloper/2008careerguide/?pg=14

Average salary for programmers in Europe is around $53 000. For artists, its around  $45 000. For Canada and US, the salaries are much higher.

In addition, even if you would manage to get some beginning developers to work for cheaper, you have to remember there typically are other employer expenses for having an employee in addition to the salary. Depending on the country these may be as high as 50% of the salary paid.

With the sum you quoted, I think you could get maybe 3 years of development with 5 people. Possibly more, if you had the money up front and would invest it smartly, selling some of them whenever you needed to pay more salaries.

...

Then again, all that is assuming traditional developers and traditional offices. You could probably get some developers from Asia for much cheaper. But doing business there can have big overheads and probably isn't that easy for small companies.

Average salary for programmers in Europe is around $53 000 or £32.711 or 37 000 euros. For artists, its around  $45 000 or £27.700 or 31 500 euros For Canada and US, the salaries are much higher. I knew wages in the gaming sector were high but these levels are an eye opener. In Britain the average wage per person is only £14 000 so those wages are well in excess of that.

Thanks for the input Waihirere. much appreciated.
