Huh? Removing the sidepanel certainly doesn't help to cool down the computer. Cleaning out the dust is recommended though.

Eh... If you have a box full of hot air, and you let the hot air out, won't the parts inside the box get cooler? Perhaps I misunderstood some of the thermodynamics in school... But me and Nightgown tend to disagree about almost everything, so do as you think is best. He doesn't seem to think that the idea of overheating is wrong though, so clean out the chassi and run it with the sidepanel open in a cool room. Also check that the fans inside your computer works, especially for the graphics card. Smiley / Pimp

Well the fans and the holes at the back and front of the computer are there for a reason... Anywho, you don't have to believe me but can for example check this article instead.

@Nity:

Interesting article. "In a properly designed PC case, the fans create a ducted airflow that enters in the front, passes over the CPU, power supply and other heat-producing hardware". True, but many cases have pretty bad airflow over the graphics card (which can also be seen on the schematics in the article).

Are you sure he has a "properly designed PC case" WITH a good airflow over the PCI-ports?

if ((heat problem) && !(computer full of dust)) {
  // he doesn't
}

Here is an example from corsair support forum which supports my theory...

http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=86159

"but when I switched to a 5970, I found that it was starved for air. (A simple test is to remove the door and see it if drastically changes things.)"

and

"...when I would remove the side panel my GPU temps would drop 7-8c"

Here is another pretty good article about solving graphic card problems...

http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?guid=&bJumpto=true&Isfrm=IN&article=articles/webonly/techsupport/ref1101/27r01/27r01.asp&ArticleID=40417

...if it didn't turn out to be a heat problem.

True, the overheating could also be caused by the poorly designed case, although I've never encountered such myself. But I guess there's nothing an engineer can't fuck up...

But in general it's not recommended to remove the sidepanel.

They don't need to fuck things up as the market is developing. Nowadays the graphic cards are the most heat producing components inside a powerful gaming computer. That was not the case 4-5 years ago, then it was the CPU. If you then line them graphic cards up in crossfire/SLI configs things get even hotter. The market is very mature when it gets to CPU-coolers, but graphic card coolers are a step behind. So are many of the chassi designs. If you buy a new graphic card, make sure you chooose one with an exhaust, or make sure your case is VERY well ventilated. If you buy a new case, check out the ventilation around the graphic cards.

You should (naturally) only remove the side panel as a test, not having it open at all times.
